The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)-mandated recall, delivered via an over-the-air (OTA) software update, aims to prevent misuse of Tesla's driver-assist features. It's crucial to understand that Autopilot is not a self-driving system; it is an advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) that combines adaptive cruise control and lane-centering steering (Autosteer), requiring the driver to remain fully attentive and in control at all times. We tested the changes on our long-term 2021 Tesla Model Y by driving the same route before and after the update to provide a direct comparison.
The primary objective of the recall, affecting over 2 million vehicles, was to address driver inattentiveness. NHTSA's investigation found that the controls of Tesla's Autosteer function "may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse." Essentially, the system was not assertive enough in ensuring the driver's hands were on the wheel and their focus was on the road. Based on our assessment experience, Tesla owners should install the recall update immediately and re-familiarize themselves with the system's behavior. More importantly, drivers must internalize the core principle of any ADAS: you are responsible for driving the car. These systems are designed to assist, not replace, an attentive driver.
