The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and its slightly larger sibling, the Bolt EUV, offer a significantly improved value proposition with lower starting prices and enhanced features, making them compelling options in the competitive electric vehicle market. While they share a core powertrain, the key differentiator is size: the Bolt EUV provides more rear-seat legroom and cargo space, and it's the first non-Cadillac Chevrolet to offer the advanced Super Cruise hands-free driving system. Based on our assessment experience, these updates directly address common feedback from previous Bolt EV owners.
Both models feature a refreshed front-end design for 2022, adopting the now-industry-standard "high-eye" daytime running lamps. The Bolt EV receives a more upright front end and new character lines. While the Bolt EUV shares this general aesthetic, it does not share any exterior sheet metal with the Bolt EV. The most noticeable difference is the profile; the Bolt EUV is 6 inches longer, with the additional length concentrated in the rear doors and cargo area. This design choice directly translates to more practical interior space.
The interior sees the most significant changes, with both models benefiting from more upscale materials, a new instrument panel design, and importantly, new, more comfortable seats.
Key tech features include:
The most notable technological differentiator is Super Cruise, GM's advanced semi-autonomous driving system. Available only on the Bolt EUV Premier trim, it allows for extended hands-free driving on compatible, pre-mapped highways. However, it does not include the automated lane-change function found in Cadillac models.
Both the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV use a carryover powertrain. A single electric motor drives the front wheels, producing 200 horsepower and 266 pounds-feet of torque. A 65-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery pack provides power. Despite the mechanical similarities, there's a slight range difference due to the EUV's larger size and weight. The Bolt EV is EPA-estimated at 259 miles of range, while the Bolt EUV is rated at 250 miles.
Charging improvements for 2022 include:
Standard safety is comprehensive, with Chevy Safety Assist including automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, and more. Available options include adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera system.
Chevrolet's primary strategy for 2022 is aggressive pricing. With the federal tax credit phased out for GM, the company has significantly reduced MSRPs.
A fully-loaded Bolt EUV Launch Edition with Super Cruise is priced at $43,495. Deliveries began in Summer 2021.
For potential buyers, the decision hinges on space and technology. Choose the Bolt EV for maximum range and a lower price point. Opt for the Bolt EUV if you require more rear-seat comfort and desire the advanced capability of Super Cruise. Both models represent a substantial value improvement over their predecessors.
