20A trip through time from 1973 to 1996 – a history of New Zealand motorsport and motoring. What life was like before the internet! Starting with issue 1 of the late Robin Curtis’ “Motoraction” in July 1973. This was a newsprint fortnightly publication. Bought by Dave McKinney in 1979, “Motoraction” continued to give news, detailed race and rally reports and feature articles that were mostly unavailable anywhere else. In June 1982 the publication became “New Zealand Motoring News”, continuing in the newsprint style until April 1988 when it moved into a more conventional magazine format. Mark Petch and Alan Dick took control of the publication and it re-launched as “Autonews” in a larger, full-gloss format. The first edition was January 1992. This collection has every issue up until February 1995. Alan Dick went his own way and started “Driver” magazine in 1994. This collection has the first issue from September 1994 through to February 1996. Also included are the first 14 issues of “Race and Rally Driver”, a fortnightly motorsport publication which sold alongside its parent “Driver” magazine. These are dated July 1995 to February 1996. Finally, there are 21 issues of “Speedsport” magazine (unrelated NZ publication), numbers 66 to 86 inclusive, from February 1996 to October 1997. The condition of the newspapers is very good, considering the oldest is more than 50 years old. The condition of the glossy magazines is excellent. All have been in dry, flat storage in 21 cardboard box-files. There are 498 individual issues. To the best of my knowledge, each title is continuous with the exception of “Motoraction” issue 152, August 1979 – renamed ‘missing in action’! Heavens knows what it all weighs, but it is a lot, so at this stage the auction is pick-up only from Bishopdale, Christchurch. For a genuine enthusiast/collector, we may be able to work something out regarding delivery. Finally, this collection is going as a job lot – no single issue or one title will split from it.
