Mo te turanga | About the role Based in Whitianga, this role forms a critical part of the new Marine District. This District's focus includes Marine Reserves, Marine Mammal Regulations the Proposed Hauraki Gulf / Tikapa Moana Marine Protection Bill, alongside a varied range of other moana / marine focused conservation activities. With wide variety in your tasks, you will collaborate with all workstreams of this District, ensuring that essential advocacy and engagement planning, delivery and reviews are completed. Your ability to work to critical deadlines while managing multiple tasks will help ensure the success of the entire team. Key areas of focus for this role include. * Community Advocacy - Identifying, planning and delivering outreach events, while engaging with the public regarding marine protection in all its forms. Supporting our seasonal advocacy ranger program, as a mentor , through the peak summer months. * Content Creation - working across our district, to create content that shares the message of `why' for marine protected areas and species. Think articles, blog posts and photography. * Statutory Activities - Advising the District Leadership Team regarding concessions permit applications, plus monitoring and reporting of existing permissions. * A critical role in the brand-new Marine District; Engage with marine conservation throughout Tikapa Moana / Te Moananui-a-Toi / The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, while also supporting the wider Whitianga team with whenua / land-based projects. * Collaboration Community: Work closely with colleagues across all the Marine District's varied workstream. You'll make a significant impact with community outreach, engagement and advocacy for protected species and places. * Compliance Statutory: Support conservation through activities such as advocacy and enforcement as a DOC Warranted Officer. You'll care for Protected Species and Areas through Compliance and Enforcement, and provide guidance for those looking to apply for permits for various activities. * You will be provided with a range of training and skill development, including the DOC Warranted Officer Training Program, enabling you to engage with and resolve compliance situations. Your audience won't always agree with your message, so resilience and the ability to maintain composure under pressure is key to your success. Flexibility in your availability will be highly advantageous, as this role requires you to work weekends and public holidays as required. You will also need the ability to travel and be away from home for multiple days. You will also need to successfully pass both Police Vetting Ministry of Justice Checks. Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and experience If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you: * Strong interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with a wide range of individuals and resolve conflicts while maintaining composure and resilience. * Excellent organisational and event planning Skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks at the same * Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with experience in report writing, and making complex themes assessable and understandable. * Outstanding time management skills, including the ability to prioritise and maintain a high level of accuracy while working towards fixed deadlines. * A broad understanding of conservation legislation and management and how it contributes to New Zealand's future sustainability. * Well-developed sense of cultural awareness, particularly in Te Ao Maori * Flexibility to take on other tasks as reasonably required by DOC, with the ability to adapt to changing needs. * Content creation skills, such as photography and creative writing * Commitment to marine sustainability and Te Papa Atawhai's Kaupapa. * Tertiary qualification in conservation, communications or a related area * A full NZ Driving Licence, including the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
