Willisbrook Orchards is a well-established, horticultural company situated close to Richmond, Nelson, growing 60 hectares of apples and kiwifruit.
The 2IC is a key leadership role, supporting the Orchard Manager, in both longer-term, and the day-to-day operations of the orchard.
This role requires the ability to plan orchard operations; clear communication with staff and stakeholders; commitment to excellence; and the technical ability to achieve that excellence. The 2IC is crucial to high-standard orchard operations that create a high-value crop: in crop protection; in tree and vine management; and in managing harvest for optimum outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
* Deputise for Orchard Manger as required
* Day-to-day leadership of orchard teams creating a positive culture by engaging and inspiring teams
* Tasks as allocated by the Orchard Manager
* Oversee harvest operations
* Manage platform-based operations (pruning, thinning and harvest)
* Health and Safety representative
* Assist in staff development to grow capability
* Biosecurity lead
You'll be an enthusiastic and skilled person, who is motivated to achieve excellent results whilst developing the team. You will also possess:
* Strong operational and technical expertise in growing apples
* Proven management and leadership experience
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships at all levels
* Knowledge and experience in managing staff
* Ability to organize, prioritise, and manage daily work effectively
* Ideally, a tertiary qualifications in horticulture and/or 6+ years of proven experience in the fruit growing sector
