Location: Sefton, North Canterbury (Rangiora)
Type: Full-time, Contract
Pay Rate: $38.50 per hour
Hours: Minimum 30 hours per week (flexible hours available)
We are seeking an experienced and capable Stud Manager to take responsibility for the daily management of a privately owned horse stud in North Canterbury. This is a full-time contract role offering flexibility in hours, making it suitable for someone who may have other work commitments.
The role involves hands-on livestock management and oversight of thoroughbreds at various stages of development, within a small, well-run stud environment.
About the Role
As Stud Manager, you will be responsible for the care, management, and development of approximately 30 broodmares and foals, as well as the handling and preparation of young stock. You will also oversee spelling racehorses and contribute to their ongoing care and development.
This role requires a practical, physically fit individual with sound horse-handling experience and the ability to manage daily routines confidently and independently.
Key Responsibilities
* Daily management of broodmares and foals
* Handling and education of young stock
* Breaking-in and limited pre-training where required
* Overseeing up to 20 spelling racehorses at various stages of development
* Feeding, general care, and coordination of foot care
* Preparing horses for yearling sales when required
* Maintaining high standards of animal health, welfare, and presentation
* Managing daily stud operations independently
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
* Proven 3 years' experience working with broodmares, foals, and young stock
* Confidence handling horses at various stages of development
* Experience with breaking-in and basic pre-training (preferred)
* Strong practical horse management skills
* Physical fitness and ability to work hands-on in a farm environment
* Ability to work independently and manage daily responsibilities
* Reliable, flexible, and committed work approach
