Summary: As an Electrical Estimator, you will take ownership of projects from enquiry to after-sales follow-up, focusing on electrical work, solar PV design, and customer-facing sales support. Company vehicle, laptop, and bonus payments on hitting KPIs First Light Electrical Solutions is a locally owned electrical and solar business based in Gisborne. We deliver high-quality electrical work and solar installations for homes and businesses across the region, with a strong focus on workmanship, safety, and customer experience. The Role As our Electrical Estimator, you will take ownership of the front end of projects-from enquiry through to design, proposal, close, gear ordering, handover to the crew, and after-sales follow-up. You will price a mix of residential and light commercial electrical work, with a strong emphasis on solar PV design and customer-facing sales support. Key Responsibilities Estimating & Quoting • Review plans, site details, and scope to produce accurate estimates and job costings. • Prepare clear, professional quotes and proposals (inclusions/exclusions, assumptions, and timelines). • Capture labour, materials, compliance, access equipment, and logistics in every estimate. • Maintain and improve pricing libraries, templates, and supplier rate sheets. Solar Design & Proposal Support • Complete solar site visits to confirm roof layout, access, switchboard capacity, and installation approach. • Produce solar PV designs: layout, component selection, stringing, and basic performance assumptions. • Ensure designs are practical, compliant, and easy for installers to execute. • Prepare customer-ready solar proposals that explain system specs, options, and value. Sales Support & Customer Communication • Manage the customer journey from enquiry through to signed acceptance. • Respond to questions quickly, revise proposals as needed, and follow up to progress decisions. • Present upgrade options where appropriate (battery readiness, EV charging, monitoring, surge protection). • Maintain a professional, helpful approach that reflects the First Light brand. Gear Ordering & Job Readiness • Create accurate material take-offs and bills of materials from estimates and solar designs. • Order gear and coordinate deliveries with suppliers to meet project timelines. • Confirm availability and lead times for key components (panels, inverters, switch gear, mounting systems). • Coordinate substitutions and variations with the team to avoid delays and cost blowouts. After-Sales Follow-Up & Handover Support • Follow up after installation to ensure customer satisfaction and resolve any issues promptly. • Support handover documentation and customer setup (monitoring/app guidance, warranty info). • Coordinate any post-install remedial work with the field team and suppliers. • Capture lessons learned and feedback to improve future estimating and designs. What You’ll Bring • Proven experience estimating electrical work (solar a plus). • Working knowledge of solar PV systems and components; ability to produce practical designs. • Strong communication skills and confidence dealing with customers on site and via phone/email. • High attention to detail, strong organisation, and the ability to manage multiple quotes at once. • A proactive mindset: you follow things through and keep projects moving. Preferred (Nice to Have) • Electrical trade background and/or NZ electrical registration (EWRB) is an advantage. • Experience with solar design tools and quoting/CRM software (or willingness to learn quickly). • Strong supplier relationship management and purchasing coordination experience. What Success Looks Like • Accurate quotes and solid margins with minimal variations caused by missed scope. • Solar designs that are compliant, practical, and consistently installable by the crew. • Materials ordered correctly and delivered on time, keeping installs efficient and on schedule. • Customers who feel informed and supported from first quote through after-sales follow-up.
