Block Manager/Shepherd General Matahuru Farms Ltd is a dynamic 1,500ha operation across several properties throughout the Waiterimu district. With 400ha dedicated to techno & cell grazing systems and 1,100ha of rolling and steeper hill country, the business supports a unique animal blood serum program for microbiology involving cattle, horses, and goats. This position offers a unique chance for skilled and motivated individual to join our progressive team as a Block Manager. In this role, you’ll take charge of a specific block, managing its daily operations and cell-grazing systems, while continually applying your expertise to enhance productivity, animal health, and operational efficiency throughout the entire business. The Role Join Matahuru Farms as a Block Manager/Shepherd General and take on a hands-on, leadership role within our team. This full-time position is ideal for someone who thrives on responsibility, enjoys working autonomously, and is eager to contribute to a progressive farming environment. Your main focus will be overseeing a dedicated 130ha block, with an emphasis on optimizing cell-grazing operations and ensuring smooth day-to-day activities. You’ll also work closely with our 2IC and have the opportunity to work alongside the rest of our team, sharing your expertise across several properties and providing support wherever it’s most needed. Key Duties (Including, but not limited to): Supervising and executing daily operational plans for the 130ha cell block, ensuring optimal cell grazing performance. Carrying out animal health programmes and maintaining excellent stock records across all stock types (cattle, horses, goats). Yard work & stock handling across multiple species. Shifting trade stock and executing precise cell grazing rotations. Reporting and communicating clearly and proactively to the 2IC. Tractor work and general machinery operation. Weed management and pasture maintenance. Fencing and water maintenance. Key Attributes & Experience: Required Attributes: Honesty & Integrity Reliability & excellent time management. Clear and constructive communication is key. We run an intensive business and need people who are great at keeping communication clear, positive, and constructive to keep the whole team moving. Proven ability to manage a block and work independently. Positive attitude and pride in your work. Excellent organisation skills—essential for liaising with other managers. Experience Required: Proven experience in livestock farming and management. Experience in intensive cell-grazing systems is beneficial, but we are willing to train the right applicant. Demonstrated ability to manage a block and work independently. Experience in handling and mustering livestock. Good level of fitness. 2 reliable Working Dogs under good command. Be able to provide at least two written or verbal references. A Current Full NZ Driver’s license and a NZ Residency or a valid NZ work visa. Remuneration & Application Remuneration will be based on your ability, experience, and leadership capability. Weekend work is a necessity in this operation; the exact roster and time off will be discussed at the interview. A house is available as accommodation upon request. Key Responsibilities: As a Herd Manager, You will primarily be responsible for one herd, with shared duties across both herds during rostered time off. Your main responsibilities will include overseeing milking, herd health, feed management, and general farm operations. You will play an active role in supervising and training junior staff, maintaining high standards of animal welfare, and ensuring smooth and efficient farm performance. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: * Carrying out daily milking operations safely and efficiently, ensuring milk quality and hygiene standards are consistently met. * Monitoring herd health, diagnosing and treating minor ailments, and maintaining accurate treatment and production records. * Managing calving, calf rearing, and assisting with breeding and mating programs. * Implementing feed and pasture management plans, including break feeding and supplement feeding. * Overseeing effluent management, irrigation, and compliance with environmental regulations. * Training and supervising junior staff, promoting good communication and a positive team culture. * Operating farm machinery and vehicles safely and maintaining them in good working order. * Identifying hazards, following all health and safety procedures, and maintaining accurate farm records. To be successful in this role, you will need: * At least two years of proven relevant work experience, or a relevant qualification at/above NZQF Level 3 (or equivalent). * Sound knowledge of animal health, calving, and reproduction practices. * Experience with pasture management, feed allocation, and environmental compliance. * Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. * Competency in operating tractors, motorbikes, and other farm machinery. * A proactive attitude, good time management, and the ability to work independently. * Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test. * Must have a clean police report with no charges pending.
