Perfect for resawing into premium planks or using as a single dramatic feature piece. Slab Details • Length: 320cm • Width: 80/ 70 cm (natural live edge) • Thickness: 7.5 cm (very thick) • Estimated Weight: ~190 kg • Drying: Air-dried for over 10 years • Optional Kiln Drying: +$200 (bringing MC to ~10–14%) This slab contains an excellent volume of high-grade Rata timber and can be milled into valuable planks, bowl blanks, or furniture-grade boards. Overview A magnificent short-length but ultra-thick North Rata slab with deep red and purple tones, extremely fine grain, and natural figure throughout. Dense, stable, and increasingly difficult to find in this size and condition. About Rata Timber (Metrosideros robusta) One of New Zealand’s most beautiful and hardest native hardwoods. • Deep red & purple hues • Interlocked, decorative grain • Density: ~880–1140 kg/m³ • Extremely hardwearing and long-lasting • Exceptional natural durability • Excellent for indoor or outdoor pieces • Historically prized for tools, carvings, and high-end crafts Pickup & Delivery • Pickup: Kumeu, Auckland (forklift onsite for easy loading) • Estimated Freight: ( need to cut shorter ) • North Island: $100–$200 • South Island: $200–$300 Provenance & Story Recovered between 2012–2013 from a remote, long-dead Rata forest near Mt Taranaki. Our bush crew spent over six months extracting these massive fallen trunks by hand through rugged terrain.
