Career progression into senior engineering and project management roles. Wells seeks a highly skilled and motivated Automation Engineer to join our Automation & Safety Solutions team. This role is pivotal in designing, implementing, and maintaining advanced automation systems across diverse industrial environments. The successful candidate will contribute to both greenfield and brownfield projects, ensuring safety, efficiency, and innovation in process control. Key Responsibilities • Design, develop, and implement PLC, HMI, SCADA, and MES systems. • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for digital process control systems. • Conduct system audits and root cause analysis (RCA) to improve reliability and performance. • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Sales, Compliance, OT, and Operations. • Lead commissioning activities including FAT and SAT. • Develop and maintain control system architecture and documentation. • Implement cybersecurity controls in line with IEC 62443 standards. • Mentor and train staff on automation systems and troubleshooting techniques. • Manage multiple projects, ensuring timely delivery and compliance with specifications. • Maintain client relationships and support business development initiatives. Required Skills & Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Instrumentation, or Computer Engineering. • 4+ years of experience in industrial automation and process control. • Proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, ABB, Omron). • Experience with HMI/SCADA platforms (e.g., Ignition, FactoryTalk, InTouch, iFIX, Citect). • Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, BACnet). • Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical and Microsoft Office tools. • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills. • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel across New Zealand and Australia. Desirable Certifications & Experience • GICSP (Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional) – Advantageous for OT cybersecurity. • CMSE (Certified Machinery Safety Expert) – Valuable for safety system design and compliance. • CFSE (Certified Functional Safety Expert) – Preferred for functional safety applications. • Experience with IIOT platforms and RTUs (e.g., Kingfisher, SCADAPack). • Knowledge of cloud-based development, Docker containers, SQL, and Power BI. • Familiarity with Australian and New Zealand standards (AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 60079).
