Lone Star Farms is seeking a motivated Head Shepherd/2IC to join the team at Barewood Station, a 5,500ha (effective) breeding operation located next to the Taieri Gorge, in-land Dunedin. This high-performing farm winters around 25,000 stock units and includes 200 Angus cows, 15,500 Headwater ewes and 4500 Hoggets. Plus a trading operation of 500 R1-R2 cattle. **The Opportunity** Are you an experienced shepherd or someone with some experience working outdoors looking to start your career in farming? Spanning 9,695 ha of effective area, the station combines productive pasture and extensive tussock country to support a robust breeding and finishing enterprise. We winter over 56,000 stock units – including 27,000 Romney ewes, 8,000 hoggets, and 1,800 Angus breeding cows and heifers. The operation finishes the majority of cattle progeny and approximately half of the lamb crop on farm. We’re looking for a capable and independent team member who enjoys working with livestock, supporting others, and taking responsibility for the day-to-day running of the farm. You’ll be part of a collaborative team, with the opportunity to step up and work with the Farm Manager to ensure the smooth operation and ongoing success of Thornicroft. Your work will be hands-on and varied, including: * Livestock management and animal health care * General farm maintenance and fencing * Supporting junior staff and leading by example * Maintaining records and ensuring environmental compliance This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a practical, outdoor environment and brings a strong health and safety mindset to all they do. **The Farm** Thornicroft Station is a stunning 3000-ha property, located just an hour inland from Dunedin, with easy access to the nearby communities of Lawrence and Outram. The farm winters 18,000 sheep, beef, and deer stock units, with 80% of progeny finished on farm. Core production includes 6,800 lambing ewes, 1,100 fawning hinds, and 530 breeding cows. Thornicroft’s location offers a wealth of recreational opportunities, including hunting and fishing with the lake front on the property. **About You** You’ll bring a strong set of stock handling skills, practical problem-solving abilities, and a team-focused attitude.
