Position based at Waltham, Christchurch (1 Position Available)   Permanent, Full-time Position, 24/7 Rotating Roster (Including Penal Rates)  Starting hourly rate between $36.38 - $42.20 (Based on Qualifications & Experience)   Mechanical/Electrical Fitter(Mechanical Engineer) He whakamārama mō te tūranga mahi | About the role:   Based at our Waltham depot in Christchurch, you’ll work hands-on with our locomotive fleet, ensuring they’re safe, reliable, and ready for action.   Whether it's routine maintenance or responding to the unexpected, you’ll be a key part of keeping our network on track.   In this role, you will:   Carry out scheduled maintenance and mechanical repairs on locomotives   Identify and diagnose faults, then work collaboratively to resolve them   Perform safety checks and assist operators with equipment   Maintain clear service records and follow all safety procedures   Support yard operations, including operation of rail vehicles  Ngā pukenga e rapu nei mātou | What you will bring:   We’re after someone mechanically minded and committed to safety.   You will bring:   Experience in heavy industry, automotive engineering   A strong focus on safety, problem-solving, and quality outcomes   A team-oriented approach and adaptability to changing priorities   A full Class 1 driver licence   Relevant Trade Qualifications or Certifications   It’s a bonus if you also have:   Diesel or Automotive Mechanic Experienced (Desirable)  Automotive Electrical Experienced (Desirable)  Welding certification (AS/NZS 2980 or ISO 9606.1)   A Level 4-5 NZQA trade certificate in mechanical fitting, or a related field  F endorsement on your NZ driver licence   Gantry crane unit standards (US 30072 and 3800)   Nōu te rourou | What’s in it for you:   We offer more than just a job—KiwiRail is a place where your skills make a difference.   You’ll benefit from:   Ongoing training and development opportunities   Clear career progression pathways in a nationally important industry   A chance to support New Zealand’s move to low-emissions transport   Travel discounts on Scenic trains and Interislander ferries   Access to Southern Cross health insurance and staff well-being support   All PPE and required training provided   Kua rite, kia rite | Ready to Make a Difference?   Rā aukati | Applications close: 14 August 2025  *Please Note, all successful candidates must undergo and pass a pre-employment medical and drug screen.
