You will play a key role in supporting the Farm Manager to ensure the successful and sustainable operation of two farms that receive factory wastewater applications. These farming systems are designed to work in harmony with wastewater processes, balancing nutrient inputs from manufacturing activities with sound farming practices. You will help uphold a proactive and high-standard approach to health and safety throughout all operations.
When the Farm Manager is off farm, you will take charge of running the farms, managing daily operations such as setting out weekly grazing plans, and maintaining a clean and well-organized farm.
Your responsibilities also include supporting Darfield site operations, handling general farm maintenance tasks like fencing and spraying, and safely operating a wide range of farm machinery. You will regularly check and maintain farm equipment and vehicles to ensure they are kept in excellent condition, and you will be diligent in keeping accurate animal health records. Your contribution will be essential in managing the farm’s environmental performance and supporting Fonterra’s Darfield Manufacturing site.

To be successful in this role, you will bring at least five years of hands-on farming experience and demonstrate confidence in performing a wide range of agricultural activities safely and efficiently. As a proactive self-starter, you will have strong skills in stock, pasture, and people management, and the ability to manage various stakeholders.

• Excellent attention to detail and a strong sense of pride in their workmanship

Industries are also critical in providing essential services for the operation of the prison.
As an Instructor - Pig, Sheep Cattle at Christchurch Men's Prison, you will be working with and providing direct supervision and practical training to men in prison on a working farm, with the primary focus of this position being the piggery. You will be involved in the day to day running of the property, working with people in prison who are employed on the farm, and training them with valuable employment skills to help them make positive change on release. In providing a platform of good working habits to take forward to the future, you will further support rehabilitation and reintegration practices that in turn support our aim to reduce offending and provide for safer communities.
The hours of work will be on a standard shift basis of 80 hours per fortnight, Monday to Friday, 0700hrs - 1500hrs. Working public holidays, along with the possibility of some overtime or callouts, may be required. There will be some seasonal work as would be expected in a farming environment e.g., hay season etc.
Instructors have the same classification as Corrections Officers and, as such, complete the same initial training courses. This will involve on-site training as well as residential training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, Wellington, to focus on the custodial elements of the position.

About the Role

• Machinery & Workshop Maintenance
Routine maintenance, repairs, servicing and readiness of tractors, diggers, side-by-sides, and farm implements. Welding and fabrication skills will be a strong advantage. You’ll take ownership of the workshop and yard.
• Farm Infrastructure & Water Systems
Help keep our tracks, culverts, tanks and troughs in top order. A practical, “see it, sort it” attitude is key.
• Machinery Operation (Seasonal Support)
Support cultivation, feeding out, and feed conservation work when required – you’ll be familiar with all relevant implements ranging from feed out wagons to mowers.
• Health & Safety Compliance

* Undertake nest monitoring and productivity monitoring throughout the season
* Relocate oystercatcher nests away from inundation zones when necessary
* Develop an oystercatcher protection regime for the Pitt Island population
* Contribute to the development or implementation of HPAI preparedness and response plans

Lambing assistant, Orari Gorge Station
Orari Gorge Station is based in the South Canterbury foothills just outside Geraldine.
We are a mix of flat, rolling and hill country totaling nearly 11,000 acres running 25,000su.
We run 9,000 ewes including 1,100 fully recorded stud ewes, nearly 700 Hereford cows, mostly fully recorded, 1,800 hinds and 300 velveting stags.
Our stud lambs are all tagged at birth and we are looking for someone to assist with the accurate data entry this lambing. The successful applicant would work in tandem with one of our regular shepherds, tagging lambs, and recording details on a suitable app. In between lambing rounds there would be other farm jobs to help with.
They are not extra long days but the position is 7 days a week for about four weeks, starting at the beginning of September. Shared accommodation is provided in a modern, warm house with good internet. We are located just 10 minutes from town.
We have a good team of shepherds with a great team atmosphere.
