Description

N. Kempthorne 71 1971. = 52 years old. Landscape Painting. Has got six Hereford cattle in a fenced paddock with a wooden gate. The meadow has a backdrop of hills and an old tree. Here's a Google Link that I found, which may give the location of this landscape? https://www.odt.co.nz/rural-life/rural-people/kempthorne-family-marks-143-years-spylaw-valley Where it says: The Kempthornes, of ***Spylaw Valley, near Heriot***, have been farming sheep and beef on the same 530ha of ***hill country*** and river flat since 1876. Father Maurice and son Tim Kempthorne are confident there will be at least one more generation of Kempthornes striding ***the farm's tussock-clad hills***. Originally settling "just over the hill", forefather Edward Kempthorne first established a property at the Heriot end of what became Kempthorne Road. ________________________________________________________ I have at least 50+ framed wall hangings. This is my favourite painting of all. It takes pride of place in my office. Why? I once knew an extensive, wealthy land-holder of Crawford Road, Mataura, and he was a sheep farmer, but for his 50th Birthday he told me that he gave himself a present, where he bought a small number of pure-bred Hereford Bulls, which he enjoyed "feeding-out" Hay off the back of his Landrover each afternoon. This paddock he had them in (when I visited) was almost a spitting image of this painting. He actually put the Landrover into some sort of low-gear, point it down a mild slope, and would get out of the Cab, jump on the back Deck and bale out the Hay to the cow's. (Very dangerous!) Happy Bidding~!
