Up for sale is a very early New Zealand piece of Athletic history. This was awarded to F.N Robinson by the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club ( SCAAC ) for winning the 1/2 Mile Flat Race in May 1883 at a time of 2 Min 13 Sec. Records online state that F.N Robinson also won the Champion Cup for 1883 as well as 1882 and would also win it for 1884. From what I can see online the SCAAC was formed in 1872 and appears to have been the first amateur athletic club formed in New Zealand. Because of the " Amateur " status winners were awarded prizes " in the form of commodities rather than cash. Taken From A History Of The SCAAC ..... "The offerings in most other events were cups or trophies worth from £2 to £10 each. In pecuniary terms alone, the value of the prizes awarded by the club was substantial, considering that between 1870 and 1880 a general labourer might earn approximately 8s per day." This Kettle ? has an unusual base that looks like it may have been heated from underneath. It stands about 250mm high overall x 195mm long x 80mm deep and looks to be EPNS but there are no marks stamps makers names anywhere that I can find. I can't even find anything similar online so it may be a local made piece ? Hopefully of interest to someone considering that the SCAAC is still active today.
