A stunning large traditional style Matau pendant, hand carved in New Zealand by local artist Don Campbell. It is carved from naturally aged deer antler and features traditional bindings and amazing rich natural colours and textures. Naturally aged antler or "found" antler has been in the elements for many years so has developed a stunning mix of colours and textures giving it a very unique antique look. This is a fully rounded thick 3D sculptural form, rather than the common thin flat form of modern Matau. It includes an adjustable plaited braid cord and a display stand made from the original deer antler crown from which this Matau was carved. Supplied in a traditional a woven presentation bag. The Matau is 65mm long and the antler crown display base is 95mm long. The Matau is one of the most powerful symbols used in Maori culture as it represents prosperity, abundance and fertility. It also is said to provide good luck and safety when traveling over water. The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life. As every piece of naturally aged antler has vastly different tones and textures, this is a one of a kind piece so it will be removed from the gallery permanently when sold. The large male deer or "stags" naturally drop their antlers at the end of the mating season every year and grow a new set the following year. The material used for this carving is from these fallen antlers which means no animal has been harmed to obtain the materials for this carving. Yes we can ship to Australia.
