OUR ROLE We’re looking for outgoing, down-to-earth, enthusiastic Wētā Cave Hosts, who are bilingual in Mandarin and English (and who have a passion for storytelling) to help us deliver great event experiences. As one of our Hosts, you’ll be guiding tours and representing Wētā Workshop to our beloved guests: * Bringing our creative journey to life by delivering guided experiences through our tour space in both Mandarin and English * Taking guests through immersive and creative experiences * Being part of our retail team in the Wētā Cave shop * Selling and processing tickets * Helping to inspire our guests to start a collection of their own by sharing your enthusiasm, in-depth product knowledge, and sales focus, creating a retail experience like no other Want to know more? Barefoot Sailing Adventures is a locally owned business operating 2 sailing catamarans. Operating from Oct - May offering a range of cruises including ticketed day sailing, evening cruises and private charters for small groups of up to 20 guests. Your proven experience with sailing vessels, excellent ship handling skills, and attention to detail will set you apart. You'll be practical and a good problem solver able to fix things on the fly. You'll be ensuring guests have a safe, enjoyable, and memorable time on our sailing cruises. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR: *At least 2 years experience as a skipper of a sailing yacht *Can do attitude with a commitment to ongoing learning *Strong adherence to maritime rules and safety standards *Good communication skills, written & verbal *Some experience in vessel maintenance, and a knack for problem solving *A love for the outdoors and a respect for Mother Nature's elements *A positive attitude, welcoming demeanor *Ability to work as part of a team and contribute to continuous improvement *Must have a good level of physical fitness, free from injury WHAT YOU'LL DO: *Ensure the smooth operation of the sailing vessel while delivering memorable experiences to our guests. *Sail to an island destination, oversee activities at the island from snorkeling and paddle boarding, delivering clear safety briefings and information for land based activities. *Share cultural, historical, and insights with guests. *This role requires you to sail both single handed and with crew, you will manage and delegate duties to crew and conduct crew training where necessary as well as regular safety drills. *Responsible for the set up and pack down of the vessel, including cleaning. *Partake in planned maintenance tasks under the guidance of the head skipper & alongside crew when required. *Share operational responsibilities with our head skipper including providing regular reporting on Health & Safety, Safe Operating Procedures, Vessel Particulars. To do well in this role you will have experience in skippering commercial vessels in a passenger facing capacity. You have a zest for life and an ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. You take everything in your stride and handle occasional curve balls with calmness and professionalism. Work is available across our tourism season 1 Oct - 30 May, with the possibility to extend into the off season for boat maintenance and return for the following season for the right person. We have many great contacts for casual winter work opportunities so there is no shortage of work in the area if you are looking for the security of year round work. FULL TRAINING INTO THIS TOURISM ROLE IS PROVIDED FOR THE RIGHT APPLICANT. HOWEVER WE DON'T HAVE CAPACITY TO TEACH SOMEONE HOW TO SAIL FROM ZERO TO HERO, SO PLEASE BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR SAILING ABILITY WHEN YOU APPLY. Hamilton location, based in the Waitomo area Full time role with minimum 30 hours guaranteed per week $35 - $40 per hour based on experience Waitomo Adventures Limited is the home of the phenomenal Lost World; Haggas Honking Holes; St Benedict’s Caverns; and others. If you’re successful, you will be stepping into a tight team; a professional but relaxed family-style company that has been operated by the founder for over 37 years. We were the first serious-adventure company to run out of Waitomo, innovative; boundary stretching and with a wicked sense of humour. Some of our guides have been with us for 20 plus years. We take our job very seriously; giving people life changing experiences and ensuring their safety is paramount every day. Health and Safety is super important; there is pre-employment and ongoing drug testing so only apply if you know you will pass this on an ongoing basis. Duties Include: • Meeting and greeting tour groups at commencement of each session • Clearly explaining to tour groups the correct and safe use of all equipment involved throughout the participation of all elements of the outdoor adventure • Supervising and guiding the tour groups and activities, including abseiling, rope ascending, ziplines, rock climbing, blackwater rafting • Rigging and operating rope access and rescue systems in accordance with best industry practice • Ensuring that all guiding equipment is up to safety standards and in good working order • Provide training for junior guides • Manage or support cave rescue training exercises • Reporting daily events including any incidents at close of each day Experience: • Prior experience is essential • This is a senior position for an individual with proven competencies in adventure tourism – especially height safety • At least two years of relevant work experience in the Adventure Caving Tourism industry is required • Height safety endorsement / certification, or similar • Full New Zealand Driver Licence or overseas equivalent with the ability to obtain a passenger endorsement as our caves are located within 30km of our base • Manual driving experience required • Good personal hygiene given the customer-facing role and close proximity of persons during the guiding sessions How to Apply: Check out our videos and website www.waitomo.co.nz to see if you think you would be a good fit.
