General Engineer/Fabricator/Welder - Full Time, Permanent Location: Washdyke, Timaru Hours: Minimum 45 hours/week, Monday to Friday (Additional hours as needed) Join a Strong Local Business with a Friendly Culture Thompson Construction and Engineering is a well-established, family-owned business based in Washdyke, Timaru. We are looking for a skilled and self-motivated individual to join our growing team in a full time permanent General Engineering/Welder role. This is a varied position that includes: * General Engineering and maintenance on a diverse fleet of large vehicles and machinery * Welding of structural steel components for construction projects. eg stairs, handrails etc. Skills and Experience: We are looking for candidates with a strong work ethic, good communication skills, and relevant hands-on experience. The ideal candidate will have: Minimum of two years' experience in general engineering Experience using gantry cranes, support offered in-house Experience using TIG and Core Flux welding A full New Zealand Driver's license Forklift and wheel endorsement, a nice to have, and can be gained on the job Ability to work unsupervised and as a team member. Certifications: Certification in FCAW and MMAW is beneficial due to the nature of our projects. We fully support our employees in maintaining and updating their certifications to meet current project and industry requirements. We are looking for a motivated and skilled individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes pride in their work. The role is full time and includes a range of well-maintained modern earthmoving machinery and a variety of projects across the Canterbury Region (based in Timaru) for our construction company. Key Responsibilities: • Plan and manage daily tasks efficiently to meet project timelines and optimize resource use. • Interpret construction plans and collaborate with the Project Manager to implement practical, effective solutions. • Communicate clearly and professionally with team members and management. • Share knowledge with team members. • Maintain accurate daily records, including resource allocation, health and safety updates, and productivity reports. • Operate a variety of heavy machinery (wheeled and tracked), including fitting and removing attachments as required. • Perform general civil construction duties, including lifting, carrying, and site preparation. What we are looking for: Having proven experience in operating machinery and Class 4 Full driver's license with WTR endorsements is essential or even better a class 5 with WTR license endorsements. About the Role We are looking for an experienced Maintenance Assistant to provide some much needed support to our busy maintenance department at our main processing and growing operation, located near Southbridge.
