Carterton, New ZealandThe kora is a traditional West African harp-lute with 21 strings, crafted from a large calabash gourd covered in cowhide, with a long hardwood neck. Played by plucking with the thumbs and forefingers, it produces a bright, layered sound that combines melody, harmony, and rhythm at once. The kora holds deep cultural value across countries such as Mali, Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea, where it is closely linked to the griot (jeli) tradition—storytellers, historians, and musicians who preserve oral history. Beyond its musical beauty, the kora embodies heritage, spirituality, and identity, serving as both an instrument of art and a vessel of ancestral knowledge in African society. This kora has a dyed skin and darkened rose wood timber and high quality machine heads. Comes with tuning guide and free tuner. Due to the size of the Kora shipping is possible in a large box but would prefer pick up.
