About Whanganui Collegiate School
Established in 1854, Whanganui Collegiate School is one of New Zealand's most prestigious co-educational boarding and day schools with a legacy of excellence spanning over 171 years. We are dedicated to fostering academic excellence, personal growth, and a strong sense of community among our students. Our rich heritage and commitment to holistic education have shaped generations of leaders and continue to inspire future generations.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a warm, reliable, and student-centered Matron to join our Boarding team in a part-time term time only role (32.5 hours per week, 38 weeks a year, Monday to Friday). This is a key pastoral care position within the school, supporting the wellbeing, daily routines, and health needs of boarders and contributing to the smooth operation of House life.
As the trusted adult presence in House, the Matron is a vital part of the pastoral care team—building positive relationships with students, staff, and parents while promoting the routines, values, and special character that underpin our boarding community.
Key Responsibilities
• Support the day-to-day wellbeing of students through caring and responsive interactions.
• Provide first-line medical support and liaise with the Health Centre as needed.
• Coordinate domestic routines such as laundry, mail, uniform needs, and supplies.
• Assist with student orientation, house routines, and general pastoral care.
• Communicate with parents and caregivers as appropriate.
• Support the Housemaster and tutors in maintaining a respectful, tidy, and structured boarding environment.
• Participate in key school and boarding events including Collegiate Weekends.
Key Qualifications and Experience
• A current full New Zealand Driver’s License is essential.
• Must successfully pass NZ Police Vetting under the Children’s Act 2014.
• Basic First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
• Prior experience in boarding, pastoral care, healthcare, education, or related environments is desirable.
• Confident, calm, and compassionate in working with young people.
• Strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
Key Competencies and Personal Attributes
• Warm, approachable, and trustworthy with sound judgement.
• Excellent communication and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
• Strong attention to detail and time management.
• Calm under pressure and able to multitask in a busy environment.
• Committed to upholding the traditions and values of Whanganui Collegiate School.
Special Character Requirements
The Matron will uphold and support the Anglican ethos of Whanganui Collegiate School. This includes promoting and modelling the school’s values of vitality, compassion, and self-discipline, and supporting the spiritual and community life of the school, including regular involvement in Collegiate Weekends and other school traditions.
