Highland Stags of Otago by D. Bruce Banwell, hard covered book of 170 pages and printed in 1968. The contents are in really nice condition, especially considering it is 57 years young. The pages are clean, no inscriptions and the dust jacket is pretty nice condition as well, the only thing to note is slight marks around the edge of the D.J. and a couple of very short rips at the top of the D.J. at the spine, see last pic. The Otago herd of red deer is the only herd in NZ that is descended from wild stock, the other herds derive from domesticated park bread animals. Banwell’s Wapiti in NZ is the standard reference work on the Fiordland Wapiti and he gives us the romantic history of Otago’s red deer. With careful research he gives us a very interesting and accurate picture of the herd’s Highland ancestry, going back to before the Jacobite Risings of 1715 and 1745. He looks at the moves leading up to the importation into NZ of the wild progenitors of the Otago herd, their liberation and the history of their winning world fame once licenced shooting was authorized. Legendary hunters, homebred and overseas of the past are detailed, with authenticated dimensions of the great trophies, and the herd ‘s spread through Otago and into Westland is fully and carefully recorded. Trophy statistics that are fully checked for accuracy are given. There are quality photographs of trophies and also scenic shots. @@@ We take extra care with packing, and our postage charge is what it costs us. We don’t charge for time or materials.
