The Monday Room is a Christchurch institution, serving some of the most delicious and innovative food in town. We are seeking a Chef with a real passion for food, to work as a part of our growing team, working towards becoming one the best restaurants in New Zealand. The available role begins in June 2025, in preparation for the busy end of year season. This role could be suited to a seasoned professional looking for work/life balance, with daytime prep shifts available. A background in, or a solid knowledge of Pastry would be a bonus. This is an opportunity to work alongside serious professionals who have worked in some of the best restaurants in Australasia. The role involves a substantive contribution to the Kitchen operation, and is only suited to a candidate with relevant experience. The successful candidate will possess the following attributes: * 2 years experience working in a similar role * A strong level of technical cookery skills and ability * The ability so be self driven, and work unsupervised * Experience and understanding of the running of a section * A High level of pride in their work * Knowledge of food safety and common use kitchen procedures * Keen interest in food and menu development * A love or interest in music is a plus * Reliable and trustworthy, this is a role for a professional, not a party animal In return we offer: * Above average pay rates * 4 days on 3 days off (optional) * Interesting cuisine on a seasonal menu (not just meat and 3 vege on a white plate) * A positive and safe working environment (not an 'old school' kitchen) * The best kitchen sound system in the city There is opportunity for progression in this role, with future expansion of both The Monday Room and other ventures planned for 2025/26 Only candidates with the requisite experience will be contacted. You will be assigned to work at Cafe Avion in Mangere and can be required to cover the shift at Alenna Cafe in Takanini from time to time when there is staff shortage. Working hours is from 30 to 40 hours per week. Pay rate ranges from $28 to $30 per hour. Your duties will include: * Check the cleanliness of food preparation area and baking equipment. * Check oven and baking equipment to ensure everything works well. * Check the quality of raw material, weight and measure ingredients. * Knead, mature, cut, mould, mix and shape dough and pastry goods. * Prepare fillings, sauces, cream etc. * Monitor oven temperatures and product appearance to determine baking time. * Remove baked goods from oven and cool baked goods. * Glaze buns and pastries, decorate baked goods. * Perform any other related duties as required.
