A Book of Curves by E. H. Lockwood - Published by Cambridge University Press - 1967. A stunning A4 size hardback with a high quality binding and very nice paper. "This book opens up an important field of mathematics at an elementary level, one in which the element of aesthetic pleasure, both in the shapes of the curves and in their mathematical relationships, is dominant. This book describes methods of drawing plane curves, beginning with conic sections (parabola, ellipse and hyperbola), and going on to cycloidal curves, spirals, glissettes, pedal curves, strophoids and so on. In general, 'envelope methods' are used. There are twenty-five full-page plates and over ninety smaller diagrams in the text. The book can be used in schools, but will also be a reference for draughtsmen and mechanical engineers. As a text on advanced plane geometry it should appeal to pure mathematicians with an interest in geometry, and to students for whom Euclidean geometry is not a principal study." Condition: This book was not a library book. The dust jacket has however been preserved within a plastic sheath and has the associated marks - white tape-glue marks along the edges and tape marks on the boards. While this is a disappointing feature, the result is a dust jacket is in otherwise perfect condition. There is a very small ding to the letter 'U'. The jacket is clipped. There's a small name inscription to the first page. No fading or sun damage! It would be unlikely to find a copy this old with an unfaded spine. Internal pages are as clean, glossy and crisp as a new book. There is light and even toning throughout. The top edge of page block is light foxed, but this is not visible on the pages. Block is straight and square, no lean, and the binding is as tight as new. The book feel barely used. Viewing and questions welcome. Book will be packed very well to protect during transit.
