The Pioneer PL-518 is a vintage turntable that will run circles around most high-end modern offerings! Although the PL-518 is technically a manual turntable— the kind traditionally preferred by audiophiles and professionals alike— it offers 2 welcome conveniences. One is the quick start function, the other is the auto-return function. When the stylus enters the lead-out groove of your record. a special device detects the increased lateral speed of the tone arm and triggers the auto-return mechanism. For the PL-518, Pioneer developed a 16-pole, 24-slot DC servomotor. This motor's magnetic circuit is twice as strong as conventional direct-drive, which contributes greatly to its improved resistance to torque ripple The signal—to-noise ratio achieved by the super-silent motor is a high 73dB & the wow and flutter is an excellent 0.03%! The tonearm is exceptionally well built and features precision-ground super—hard carbon-chromium steel bearings in the vertical plane and a thick, die-cast aluminium arm base. Contributing to the overall low-error speed constancy of the PL-518 is its special heavy aluminium diecast platter. I’ve clad he plinth in real wood veneer and it is also really weighty, as the bottom sheet is made of SPC steel with high-speed vibration propagation. It’s in perfect working order and sounds amazing! It’s also in good physical condition with the odd blemish, and some marks on the dust cover.
