Rewarewa wood is one of the most beautiful native hardwoods in New Zealand. Also known as New Zealand honeysuckle, the Rewarewa tree can grow up to 30 meters tall, with trunks reaching up to 1 meter in diameter. This unique native tree often reaches 12-15 meters before branching out. It grows from sea level up to 850 meters and can be found throughout the North Island and in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island. The timber is strong, tough, and elastic yet workable, though challenging to season. Its dry sapwood has a silvery pinkish-brown color, while the heartwood is a deeper reddish to purplish brown with striking medullary rays. When quarter-sawn, Rewarewa wood reveals a stunning appearance, with its medullary rays creating varied tight to open patterns, significantly affecting the finished look. It bears some resemblance to oak in this aspect. Historically, Rewarewa was used for inlay and decorative work during the early decades of European settlement due to its unique grain. Today, its distinctive grain continues to captivate visitors to New Zealand. We can assist in arranging freight at the buyer’s cost after the auction.
