Extremely rare Wortley "A" blademakers anvil - probably the only one in NZ, let me know if there's another! Made in Sheffield, England, about 200years ago at best guess, from the famous Wortleys in Sheffield. see image from a "must read" article. https://victorianweb.org/periodicals/englishillustrated/13.html Extremely heavy, about 160kg as best as I can measure (80kg with anvil central on a plank between a block and the scales, so should be even weight distribution) Special blademakers anvil - suit swordsmiths, knifemakers, sawyers. Anvil has radiused top, sheer back and increasing taper to the front - so when blade making you can strike "flat" and let the tapered top do the work of producing an even, tapered blade. How far down the anvil face you strike determines the taper angle. Twin "ears", each with a hardy hole - one standard size, one extra large, I believe to accomodate the large spring sets used for things like the blood channel on sword blades. Notching cutout on one end of the top face. Reluctant sale - happy to keep it if it doesn't sell! Pickup is in Birkdale, North SHore, Auckland Key words: blacksmith, sword, swordsmith, armourer, knife, knife maker, sawyer, blade maker, blade, anvil, antique, collectors
