The 2021 Nissan Rogue emerged as the surprising winner in a rigorous professional comparison test of compact SUVs, surpassing rivals like the Honda CR-V, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Subaru Forester. This victory marks a dramatic improvement from its previous position, demonstrating the success of its complete redesign for the 2021 model year.
The Rogue’s win was determined by a comprehensive evaluation across 17 categories, totaling a maximum of 540 points. It excelled in key areas crucial for modern families, including rear-seat comfort, user-friendly technology, and interior storage, ultimately securing the top spot with a score of 387 points.
The Rogue’s cabin was a significant factor in its victory. Our test vehicle, a top-tier Rogue Platinum trim, featured a remarkably comfortable and practical interior. It earned top marks for its rear seat comfort, a category where it stood out for its roominess and unique features.
One of the most notable advantages was its rear automatic climate control. Unlike passive air vents, this system allows rear passengers to set their own temperature, a feature found on only one other SUV in the test. Furthermore, the Rogue was the only vehicle equipped with built-in rear door sunshades, a highly coveted feature for parents seeking to protect children from the sun. These thoughtful details cemented its lead in comfort and convenience.
In an era of overly complex car controls, the Rogue shined by prioritizing simplicity and intuition. It won the vehicle user interface (UI) category, which assesses how easily a driver can operate climate, multimedia, and steering wheel controls. The philosophy is simple: if a system requires a learning curve, it’s poorly designed.
The Rogue avoids this pitfall entirely. It features physical knobs for volume and radio tuning, along with conventional buttons for climate settings, making operations intuitive. This contrasts sharply with competitors like the Tiguan and Tucson, which adopted frustrating touch-sensitive panels. The Rogue’s multimedia system also scored highly, offering wireless Apple CarPlay (though Android Auto requires a cable) and a versatile mix of USB Type-A and Type-C ports, eliminating the need for adapters.
Beyond comfort and tech, the Rogue proved its mettle in everyday usability. It tied for first place in the powertrain category with the Hyundai Tucson, indicating a refined and responsive driving experience. It also achieved a four-way tie for first in driver-assistance technology.
A key practical advantage is its in-cabin storage. The Rogue features a cavernous center console storage area beneath the gear selector, large enough to hold a substantial bag or purse. This was one of several areas where it outperformed its corporate cousin, the Mitsubishi Outlander, with which it shares some components. The interior quality was also a strong point, finishing just one point behind the class-leading Forester and representing a massive improvement over the previous-generation model.
While the Rogue won by avoiding major flaws, it wasn't perfect. Its performance in cargo testing was middling; it finished just above the last-place Forester. It lost points for lacking a sliding rear seat, which can enhance cargo flexibility. The overall cargo volume was average for the class.
Some judges also noted that the ride quality could be stiff, transmitting harsh impacts over rough roads. However, this is a common trait among best-selling compact SUVs like the CR-V and Toyota RAV4, and it wasn't a significant enough drawback to deter from its overall victory. The narrow point spread between first and last place (387 to 383) highlights that all tested SUVs were highly competent.
Based on our assessment experience, the 2021 Nissan Rogue’s victory is a testament to a well-executed redesign that focused on user-friendly features, family comfort, and intuitive technology. Its success comes from doing the important things very well and avoiding the controversial missteps of some competitors. For shoppers, the key takeaway is that the Rogue represents a balanced and highly capable choice in the competitive compact SUV segment.
